A phrase I use quite often is… “life happens on life’s terms”. I use this phrase to teach the concept that life unfolds in its own unpredictable and uncontrollable manner. “Life happens on life’s terms” emphasizes the recognition that we cannot control or dictate every aspect of our lives. Life is filled with ups and downs, unexpected events, and circumstances beyond our control. When we shift our perspective that there will be ups and downs, unexpected events, and circumstances beyond our control, we can feel more resilient.

It reminds us that we cannot control external events or the actions of others. However, we do have control over our responses and attitudes towards those events. It encourages us to focus on how we choose to react and adapt to the circumstances presented to us, rather than resisting or fighting against them.

Understanding Life’s Terms:

Life’s terms refer to the unpredictable nature of existence. It encompasses both positive and negative experiences, such as relationships, career changes, loss, and adversity. The key is to acknowledge that we cannot control everything that happens to us, but we have the power to choose our response.

This perspective encourages us to let go of the idea that life should always conform to our desires or expectations. It acknowledges that despite our best efforts, things may not always go according to plan. By accepting this reality, we can cultivate resilience, adaptability, and a healthier mindset in navigating life’s challenges.

Embracing the concept of “life happening on life’s terms” allows us to develop greater acceptance, flexibility, and personal growth. It invites us to find meaning, learn from experiences, and make the most of the opportunities that come our way.

How do we do this?

Another phrase you may have heard is the concept that “life happens TO us” versus “life happening WITH us”. Viewing life as happening “to us” or as happening “with us.” You can read the difference between these perspectives and about the benefits to our mental health and well-being when we embrace the concept of life happening “WITH US”.

Life Happening TO Us:

When we perceive life as happening “to us,” we tend to view ourselves as passive recipients of circumstances beyond our control. This perspective often leads to feelings of victimization, powerlessness, and resentment. It reinforces the belief that external factors solely shape our lives, leaving us without agency to create change or find meaning in our experiences.

Adopting this mindset can adversely impact our mental health and well-being in several ways.

Negative Impact:

  1. Victim Mentality: Seeing life as happening “to us” encourages a victim mentality, where we perceive ourselves as helpless and at the mercy of external forces. This mindset erodes our sense of personal responsibility and hampers our ability to take proactive steps towards growth and improvement.

  2. Increased Stress and Anxiety: Feeling like passive recipients of life’s events can lead to heightened stress and anxiety. The lack of control and uncertainty can trigger a constant state of worry, making it challenging to cope with challenges and adapt to change.

  3. Limited Perspective: This perspective often restricts our ability to see alternative solutions or possibilities. It narrows our focus to the negative aspects of our experiences, hindering personal growth and hindering resilience.

Unhealthy Responses:

  1. Denial and Avoidance: Denying or avoiding the reality of life’s challenges can temporarily relieve discomfort. However, this approach prevents us from addressing the issues, leading to unresolved emotions and prolonged distress.

  2. Blaming and Victim Mentality: Assigning blame and adopting a victim mentality can be tempting when facing adversity. However, it perpetuates a sense of powerlessness and hinders personal growth.

  3. Escapism and Substance Abuse: Turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as excessive alcohol or drug use, excessive gaming, or binge-watching TV shows may provide temporary relief, but they fail to address underlying issues and can lead to addiction and further complications.

Life Happening WITH Us:

On the other hand, perceiving life as happening “with us” recognizes our active participation and co-creation of our experiences. It emphasizes our ability to respond to events with intention, curiosity, and resilience. By adopting this perspective, we acknowledge that we have the power to shape our lives and find meaning even in the face of adversity.

Benefits to Mental Health and Well-being:

  1. Empowerment and Agency: Embracing the concept of life happening “with us” restores our sense of empowerment and agency. It reminds us that we have choices and can take intentional actions to navigate life’s challenges, fostering a greater sense of control and personal responsibility.
